More about the CPS®
We are at Enneagram profiling are committed to the promotion of best practice methods within the field of psychometrics. Outlined below is a desription of the CPS®
The CPS® has more than a thousand questions to draw on, consisting of value-balanced paired statements similar to the one above. It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete but if you get interrupted you can return to the test from where you left off. The test is adaptive according to responses so no two people take the same path through. On average the algorithm will ask an average of 82 questions.
Evidence Based Approach
We believe that what can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. We are the experts in asking the right questions and gathering the strongest evidence. We also have the strongest algorithm for drawing a conclusion. However, when time is available we like to engage our clients in that process- we take them step by step through our analysis. We find this builds interest, understanding and insight and gives our clients greater confidence in our conclusions.
Value-Neutral Questions
“If you ask a silly question … you get a silly answer.” We all know that old adage but yet continue to ask value laden questions in high stress environments. If you ask someone to rate themselves on a scale of conscientiousness, dependability or decisiveness at work you are going to find that people present the best image they can of themselves- why wouldn’t you? We ask people to compare two statements that are value balanced and in doing so we ask a good balanced question.
Reliability
A properly developed test will have been shown to both reliable and valid. Reliability is the overall consistency of a measure. A measure is said to have a high reliability if it produces similar results under consistent conditions. ... Scores that are highly reliable are accurate, reproducible, and consistent from one testing occasion to another. One form of reliability is test-retest reliability - that is, if you take a test twice will you get similar scores? Our test-retest reliability in terms of dominant Type is .92 (n 114) which indicates that the test is consistent and reliable.
Validity
A properly developed test will have been shown to both reliable and valid. Validity is the extent to which a test measures what it purports to measure. The validity of the CPS® can be assessed by how accurate it is identifying the dominant type of those who take it. We used a sample taken from a business environment who had no a-priori knowledge of the Enneagram. The CPS® correctly identified the dominant type in 94% of cases and that rises to 99% if you include the second highest ranking type suggested by the CPS®. This represents the strongest validity for a type based model.
Typing or Profiling?
We use the term profile rather than type because the advantage of the CPS® is that it provides a full personality profile across all nine types- rather than just indicating your dominant type, wings or arrows. This approach reflects the fact that the Enneagram is a moving dynamic. While it is true to say that you have a dominant type of “home base”, you equally move around the Enneagram. The CPS® provides you with a unique portrait, indicating the relative strengths and weaknesses of the nine types within your overall personality.
