How to Read this Table

  • The highest score in the table is very likely to represent your "core type"- which in your case is Type One.
  • In a few cases people recognise themselves more in the type that ranks second; and in very rare cases, the type that ranks third.
  • This is more probable if the difference between the top two or three scores is less than five.
  • A score of 30 indicates the mid-way point. It illustrates you have answered some of the questions in a way that is aligned with others of that type but equally you have answered other questions in way that is not aligned with people of that type.
  • Scores above 40 indicate that you  answered a significant number of questions in a way that's aligned with other people of that type.
  • A score below 20 indicates most of your responses were not in alignment with other people of that type.

How to ... Understand Type ...it points to why we do what we do!

  • Think about the Enneagram at the level of personality more in terms of motivation rather than behaviour
  • It is not so much the behaviours that you may well recognise as the reasons why someone might behave that way.
  • We use patterns of behavior here to identify and describe the motivation that may lie behind the behaviours.
  • Two people may do the same thing but the reason why they act this way could be very different if they are a different type.
  • Equally two people of the same type may behave differently but their motivation to act that way will be very similar.

Type One’s Motivational Drive explained ..... Goodness!

If you recognise these footprints you might also feel that inside you are intimately connected to the goodness and perfection of things…. but your reality and your everyday “self” does not quite reflect or match up to that deep inner sense of the way things could and should be. You have a desire to get back to that sense of inner peace where things are OK as they are and integrity and wisdom comes from knowing that goodness is all around you and that you are faultless within that.

However your daily reality is likely to be more likely to be a reflection of how you react to the imperfections, injustices, distortions and untruths that everyday reality brings.

·         Goodness…. is a drive that is focused on ensuring that the gap between “the way things are” and “the way they should be” is narrowed with personal effort and determination. The ever present sense that things are not quite right is combined with a sense of responsibility for such a state of affairs. This is not an altruistic drive but it is a drive to make things better, to improve on reality and make things as good as they should be in my world or the world of others. The ability to discern right from wrong and the way things "ought to be" feels natural; these common sense set of expectations sets a continual pathway of living. The drive to improve can be focused on myself, or on those I care for, or on the social and physical environment. I have to be sure that “I” am not part of the problem. I strive to be “good” in order to know that “I am playing my part” faultlessly; for I would hate to be judged otherwise by myself or others. Things will only be right to the extent that I, or those I guide lead and inspire, are acting for rightness and “goodness”.

Core Emotional Pattern …. Self-control and suppressed anger

Type One’s control their emotional reactions to things. As this pattern becomes more engrained they may regularly feel one thing but express another. The reason for this is two-fold. The first is that they need to be the person they think they should be … and that often does not match up with what they are feeling. And second there is a degree of frustration and irritation with the sense that ... “nothing lives up to my standards including myself”. The frustration that this creates is also unsafe to express.

There are some Type One’s who do emotionally project this discontentment with the way things are onto others. In this case other people can become the focus of their emotional reactions as they try to get the people around them to improve. This pattern represents the projection of irritation onto others.

For most type ones the whole emotional sphere of reactions, impulses and desire represent a distraction from what they are trying to achieve- the lack of trust in such bodily feelings can make them quite “heady” as they try to keep such influences in check.  It is not safe to be free to do what one wants to do as this can distract one from the path. This patterns can perpetuate the sense of resentment as one tries to keep anger, desire and impulses in check.

It is important to recognise that “Being good” for a Type One does not have to mean being a “good boy” or “good girl” in the conventional sense- although this is often the case. It refers to the need to be aligned with one’s own sense of what is right and the inability to deviate from that. The relentless demand of the inner critic keeps oneself aligned with their inner sense of the way things should be. To strive to personify the ideal state they see as being possible.
