TYPE THREE SUBTYPES EXPLAINED

THE SELF PRESERVATION SUBTYPE -

Self-preservation Threes' attention focuses on material security. Success means having enough and some to spare; and from this point of view there is never enough. The ultimate success is always in the future, with the achievement of yet another goal.

“I come from a poor background. It has been a lifelong determination that I would never be in those financial straits. I’m in venture capital, and although I have savings, property, and an income others raise their eyebrows at, I can’t seem to lose that feeling. It’s actually a burden to me now, and I know it’s irrational, but I have this inner compulsion to keep going so that I’m secure.”

This subtype has the "vanity of no-vanity"- they see their strivings as an intention to be good rather than to look good. The image part of the Type Three is least conscious for this subtype. They are more likely to acknowledge that they have an internalised ideal model of the person they want to be. The next step is recognising that they want others to acknowledge that they live up to that model.

THE ONE TO ONE (SEXUAL) SUBTYPE -

This subtype of Type Threes focuses on their personal magnetism- their striving is related to being charming and charasmatic They want to be successful at being 'men' or 'women' and whatever that means in terms of their ego ideal.

“It’s always been important to me that I look good, that people look at me and are attracted. It’s not just sexual attraction, though going out to dinner I will dress elegantly and discreetly in the style I know my date likes. I look feminine, but I’m in business, and I’m usually the most sharply dressed 'business man' there, and I do the job as a man would, if not better.”

They may adopt a subtle approach where one adopts the skills that are valued by those they might like to attract, it could be musical ability, or a knowledge of art -but the intention is the same; they want to project an attractive image to those they want to attract.

THE SOCIAL SUBTYPE

Social Threes focus on status and prestige; these Type Threes focus on social survival and are concerned with their status in the group. Each goal is targeted for the potential prestige it will give them in their workplace and their community, and membership of a certain club may be as important a goal as success at work. This is the most interpersonally competitive of the Type Threes who strives to climb the social ladder.

“I’m head of, or on the committee of, most of the good local organisations and social clubs. I’m regularly in the local paper for charity drives or gala openings - small pieces, but my community knows me - and knows that I know important people outside our local group. But also respect is important: I am known and liked - I always get a friendly greeting.”
